If a dumbbell is ever going to hit your garage floor, buy the QuickDraw: mostly steel, drop-tested, built for occasional drops, lifetime warranty on defects. Bowflex's SelectTech BD552 manual says dropping one damages the plates and voids the warranty.
Prices checked October 27, 2026. QuickDraw Adjustable Dumbbell (LB), 60 lb pair in stock at REP Fitness as of October 27, 2026 (60 lb pair).
Why the coach picked it
- Dropping. REP says the QuickDraw is almost all steel, drop-tested from every angle and built to withstand occasional drops; if you must drop it, drop it flat. Bowflex's SelectTech BD552 owner's manual says 'Do not drop the dumbbell': it damages the plates and/or locking mechanism and voids the warranty.
- Warranty: REP gives a lifetime warranty on defects in material and workmanship, original buyer only. It does not cover drop damage ('consistent drops', 'accidents (drops/dings)'), so the drop tolerance is in the design, not the warranty. Bowflex gives 2 years on parts and sells 3- and 5-year Protection+ plans for $69 and $99.
- It goes heavier: 60 lb a hand vs. 52.5. If you're doing dumbbell snatches and thrusters at Rx, that last 7.5 lb matters.
- Bowflex has the finer steps: 2.5 lb jumps up to 25 lb, then 5. The QuickDraw's switches move in 10 lb steps; the two included 2.5 lb micro plates give 5 lb steps, or 2.5 lb if you accept a slight imbalance.
- Price per pound, the Bowflex wins: $399 for 105 lb total is about $3.80/lb on sale ($4.56 at $479). The 60 lb QuickDraw pair is $575.99 for 120 lb, about $4.80/lb. You're paying for steel and the warranty.
When the other one is the right call
If you lift at home, set your dumbbells down every rep, and want small jumps for curls and presses, the Bowflex is the cheaper buy, especially at the $399 sale price.
